Fr. Dan's Spring course
Join us in May at Trinity Aurora (in person or online) for Fr. Dan's Spring Course, "After the Apostles: Christianity in the Second Century".
Fr Dan will lead the group through reading and discussion of the writings of Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, the Didache, the Martyrdom of Polycarp, the Protoevangelium of James, the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Peter, and several other early Christian texts that survive from the period following the death of Jesus' first disciples.
We will be using the text Early Christian Writings (ed. Louth/Staniforth, Penguin Classics) which can be purchased from Amazon or other booksellers either in paperback or on kindle. Other texts will be distributed.
Optional text: The Nag Hammadi Scriptures (Meyer, HarperCollins).

In-person: Wednesdays (9 am – 10 am)
Online: Thursdays (10 am - 11 am OR 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm)
Session 1: Texts – Letters of Ignatius of Antioch, 1 Clement – orders of ministry, martyrdom, the rise of the importance of Rome.
Session 2: Texts – Martyrs of Lyons, Martyrdom of Polycarp – more stories of martyrdom
Session 3: Texts – The Didache, Epistle of Barnabas – Church order
Session 4: Texts – Papias, Gospel of Peter, Protoevangelium of James – Canon formation and other attempts at writing the story of Jesus (with gnostic overtones)
Session 5: Text – The Gospel of Thomas – The sayings of Jesus through a Gnostic lens
Session 6: Text- Irenaeus of Lyon, Tertullian of Rome – later second century responses and developments.
