In St John's Gospel, John the Baptist echoes the famous line
which is actually a quote from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah

Way of the Lord'. Rev'd Dawn Davis considers those things which
act as an obstacle or distraction from our following the straight

2011 Sermon by Rev'd Dawn Leger ~ Consecration of the
Church (8:00am)
Our gospel (Matthew 25:31-46) is familiar, particularly in its
discomfort. If our final judgment were only a matter of what we
say we believe, reciting the creed, we could live with that. But
Jesus is so clear that we will be judged not only by what we say
we believe, but how we live it out, how we respond to the world
around us every day, the choices we make, choices for grace,
generosity and compassion over fear, greed and judgment of others.

Canon Davis began her sermon with a fantasy of a techno-centric
church which included food service--an important part of
community. She indicated that the current era is the type of
change that occurs every 500 years. In making this point, she drew
parallels between Gutenberg's printing press and the Web. Our
mission and purpose in life is to share the Good News and to build
Peace, Justice, and Truth in the world.

global unrest and violence?" He answers that some of the factors
that create cohesion within a group may create an antagonistic
posture towards other groups. However, he also points out that
religion can be used and abused for political purpose and that
lack of social justice is a major cause of strife.

Davis - Epiphany
The Rev'd Canon Dawn Davis began the
Shedding
Some Light sermon series today. The topic was
Faith: Why do bad things happen to good people? A test of
faith is when the just or innocent are hurt. Where is God?
Canon Davis explores four of the traditional answers to the
question. Building on the work of Harold Kushner (When Bad Things
Happen to Good People) and Philip Yancey (Where is God When It
Hurts?), Davis (at about 10:22) rejects all four of these answers
and then synthesizes two additional options: atheism or asking a
different question: instead of asking "Why do bad things happen to
good people?" to "How do I cope when bad things happen to me and
those I love?".

The Rev'd Dawn Leger had prepared a sermon about the version of
the visitation of the Magi based on Matthew's Gospel expecting
some of the children to come forward and sit with her. No children
came forward, so she gave the sermon from various places in the
centre aisle of the Historic Chapel. While the sermon focused on
the Magi and their visit to Herod and how their news of his
jealousy allowed the baby Jesus and his family to escape Herod's
wrath, the microphones were not focused on Dawn (we do not use the
wireless head-worn microphones in the Historic Chapel)! We have
decided to include this despite sub-standard recording quality, as
it is a good and animated telling of this version of the story and
the importance of Epiphany.
