  • 27th June 2010  Rev'd Canon Dawn Davis -  5th Sunday after Pentecost
The Rev'd Canon Dawn Davis begins with a playground story to illustrate Jesus's attempts to make peace between the Samaritans (adherents to Samaritanism, an Abrahamic religion closely related to Judaism) and the Jews. Then she addresses the opportunity of the children being baptized today to choose in their daily path between wanting to "bite and devour each other" or "love their neighbour as themselves", and ends with the question, "what would it take to stop the cycle of conflict?"
(An unrelated distraction was removed near the beginning of the sermon)

  • 20th June 2010  Rev'd Canon Dawn Davis -  4th Sunday after Pentecost
The Rev'd Canon Dawn Davis explained the outcome of General Synod in Halifax. She began by quoting from Primate Fred Hiltz, "...our church has been truly renewed in the Spirit of God, reborn in love, we have a new beginning." She continues,"We knew we had been part of something that was monumental for who we are as a church. Something had happened there that marked a brand new beginning." After further explanation about how the "homosexual issue" was resolved at General Synod, Rev'd Canon Dawn Davis declared, "I most definitely want to affirm that here at Trinity all people: Jew, non-Jew, male, female, young, old, black, white, Aboriginal, non-Aboriginal, all cultures, gay, lesbian, straight, are welcome here." This statement was met by spontaneous applause from the congregation. Canon Davis closed the sermon with a touching story from General Synod.

  • 13th June 2010  Pat Desbarats & Reneč Gallant -  3rd Sunday after Pentecost
This was to have been our outdoor service on the Rectory Lawn, but it was rained out and held in the church. The tradition at this service is for a parishioner to speak of their faith journey. This year, Patrick and Renée Desbarats discussed their individual and joint faith journeys. In February, they were challenged by Patrick's job offer at the American School in Doha, Qatar, on the Arabian Peninsula, across the Persian Gulf from Iran. They will be moving before the end of the summer. We wish them well, and look forward to seeing them when they return in the summers.

  • 16th May 2010  Rev'd Stephen Kern -  Sunday after Ascension
The Rev'd Stephen Kern helped us understand the Feast of the Ascension. He explains how Luke's gospel and the Acts of the Apostles describe the joyous nature of this event. Stephen also quickly charts the changes in our cosmology and how that increases the complexity of our understanding of the Ascension. One of the important points is that the Ascension restores the triune God-head that was fractured by the incarnation. With Jesus sitting on the right hand of God, we have an advocate within the God-head.

The fifth and final sermon in the 2010 Lenten series was delivered by The Rev'd Stephen Kern. He briefly summarized what we had heard over the previous four weeks and then asked, "What should we do?". One key point that he addressed was that we should not feel guilt for something we had no control over. This reiterated the theme of his 10th January 2010 sermon  where he identified "irrational guilt" as a major stumbling block to and the antithesis of becoming involved in meaningful service to the community.
